CoolerMaster MM720 Review

CoolerMaster MM720

In short, the CoolerMaster MM720 is an excellent mouse in a compact and lightweight package. With nothing but the top-of-the-line in terms of sensor tech, ergonomics and aesthetics, the mouse both looks and feels like it can line up the perfect headshots while having the actual technical prowess to back it up. In terms of price, the mouse also comes at a very reasonable price point of around 4500 INR for the features that it offers.

BUILD QUALITY

The construction is plastic which helps with keeping the weight down while maintaining a reasonably durable shell. The same feels very sturdy and has multiple cutouts, almost in a honeycomb mesh style for shedding weight even further, giving the mouse a final weight of around 50 grams, which is fantastic. Said cutouts also conveniently allow ample space for the underlying beautiful RGB lighting to shine through. On the topic of RGB, CoolerMaster’s MasterPlus+ software can control the lighting, which you can download here. With sturdy and satisfying keys, the MM720 boasts a solid build quality in its weight class.

DESIGN

The CoolerMaster MM720 features a very tasteful design. It neither overdoes the aesthetic to feel too gamer-y nor does it underdo the same to feel too bland. CoolerMaster manages to strike the perfect balance between utility, tasteful lighting and a comfortable ergonomic design. On the topic of ergonomics, it features a ‘ClawGrip’ and while the experience would differ from person to person, we found the grip to be sufficiently satisfying with regards to the positioning of the fingers. The RGB lighting shines through the mouse wheel and the back of the mouse where the cutouts are placed, making the mouse aesthetically pleasing and of great value considering its price point.

FEATURES

No mouse review would be complete without discussing its sensor. The CoolerMaster MM720 features a top-of-the-line Pixart 3389 16,000 DPI sensor. The 16k DPI sensitivity might be a godsend for lining up the perfect 360 no-scopes in Call of Duty, but for most gamers out there, 3200 to 6000 is a comfortable range as well. Fortunately, the CoolerMaster MasterPlus+ software can control the sensitivity, allowing you to set up to seven presets and a slider capable of controlling the sensitivity in 100 DPI steps.

The mouse also includes braided cables for increased durability, which is an excellent addition to an already fantastic product. There are two programmable keys on the mice which can be assigned functions from the MasterPlus+ software. Thus, you can easily program it to switch/cycle quickly between sensitivity profiles during gameplay to suit your mission style in no time. Overall, nothing other than praise in the technical aspects of the mouse.

MODELS

The MM720 comes in 2 different colour styles – White and Black. Each of the colour styles has an additional choice of either featuring a glossy or a matte finish. The model we received has a Matte Black finish which is perfect. However, we have noticed that the matte finish has an increased tendency to pick up finger oil, but that is just us nitpicking on something very trivial in an excellent product. CoolerMaster is generous enough to include additional grip tape, which you can apply to the mouse’s body to make it’s already superb grip even more textured. The PTFE feet is the reason why the mice slides so effortlessly on most surfaces. CoolerMaster even includes replacement PTFE feet if you want to swap them out in a few years. All in all, they have the customers covered, taking into account one’s aesthetic preferences as well as replacement parts that one might or might not need.

SOFTWARE

The MasterPlus+ software from CoolerMaster can control the various features of the MM720. The primary tabs we would be taking a look at are labelled Buttons, Performance and Lighting.

Buttons Tab allows one to assign various functions to any of the buttons on the mouse. A graphic showing the mouse itself and the related controls also illustrates the same.

The Performance Tab allows one to customize how the mouse behaves according to one’s preference. Here you can change settings such as the double-click speed and button response time. This Tab is also where the DPI customization settings reside. One can create, customize, enable or disable profiles and use the slider to alter the mouse sensitivity.

Other features such as the USB polling rate can be changed here, altering how often your mouse takes a reading and updates the pointer on the screen. Angle snapping and lift-off distance can also be customized here.

The surface tuning feature present on the bottom right of the screen allows one to fine-tune the mice’s behaviour on the specific surface one is using. Although we cannot comment on the real-world benefit of the feature, it is nevertheless a very interesting feature to have.

The Lighting Tab is the control centre for all the RGB features the mouse includes. The UI is straightforward, allowing you to choose a specific colour, choose custom colours and choose between various LED behaviour modes, such as static, breathing, colour cycle, etc.

EXPERIENCE

In short, our gaming experience with this mouse was superb. The mouse feels comfortable and is lightweight enough to drop down the sensitivity to 700 DPI from the usual 800 – 1000 we are habituated to using. The 700 DPI setting allowed for better aim control when aiming through a scope at a distant target. We mapped the programmable buttons to alternate between 3000 and 700 DPI when gaming, which allowed us to turn quickly and control aim as and when necessary, giving a serious competitive edge to FPS gamers. Not only does the MM720 pack in an excellent sensor, but it also commands best-in-class response time according to our testing.

All of the above combined, whether or not you are someone used to top-of-the-line gaming peripherals, the MM720 offers excellent value coming in at a very competitive price tag, making the price of entry into the same relatively reasonable. Couple that with fantastic performance, and you have the perfect mouse for your gaming skills to shine.

The Review

CoolerMaster MM720

9 Score

The CoolerMaster MM720 is a beast of a mouse with a reasonable price tag. You can pick one of these up for around 4000-4500 INR today. They are one of the lightest, most durable and tastefully built mice in the current market. With excellent build quality, ergonomics and great lighting to boot, the CoolerMaster MM720 looks very aesthetically pleasing while having serious hardware to back it up with top-of-the-line performance.
